Asian countries’ history textbooks

The following sentence is the extracts taken from an article in the Yomiuri Shinbun on 16 December, 2008, under the sub heading of “The Japanese textbook is the most controlled of all, it neither admires the war, nor fuels patriotism” The article was written on the basis of the result of ” The comparative study of history textbooks of Asian countries and America” conducted by the Stanford University.
It says..
contrary to expectations “They(Japanese history textbooks) don’t glorify the war, emphasize the importance of the military, or describe acts of heroism on the battlefield. They are timelines that only give accounts of historical events without describing narratives.” and says that on the other hand, the textbook of one of the neighboring Asian countries obviously fuels the people’s ethnic self-esteem or nationalism, some other country’s one describes their many heroic military operations proudly, but not enough writing on the historic big events that many countries’ textbooks must reference.

For the people who have studied history at the Japanese school, it was nothing special that the content of the history textbook is the “timelines that only give accounts of historical events without describing narratives”. The Japanese have always been taught that is what is the history education all about. Conversely We are surprised that there are any kind of history textbooks else.

I think if you read this, you will know some of the truth about the relationships between Japan and its neighboring countries. There are no real right wings in Japan, but only people who became aware of the importance of caring their own country as every country’s people do.
.
.

“The Japanese textbook is the most controlled of all, it neither admires the war, nor fuels patriotism”

There have been concerns about worsening relationships among Northeast Asian countries due to the differences in historical perceptions about the past war. The ASIA-PACIFIC RESEARCH CENTER (Shorenstein APARC) at Stanford University conducted a project of a comparative study of the history textbooks used today in Japan, China, Korea, America and Taiwan.
The result shows that Japanese history textbooks don’t glorify the war and are the most controlled of all the textbooks in the study. We will introduce the following two articles. One is the result of the study written by Mr.Peter Duus, professor of Japanese History, one of the major members of the study. Another is a summary of the study written by Mr. Daniel C. Sneider, the former correspondent of a U.S. Paper in Tokyo.

Implicit Lesson

The Japanese history textbooks for high schools have gained a bad reputation in the foreign mass media for the last 30 years. They have been criticized for not paying much attention to the responsibility for starting the Pacific War or bringing suffering into people’s lives in the regions Japan occupied. Some even maintain that the content of these books has become increasingly patriotic.
The study of “Divided Memories and Reconciliation” at APARC disclosed the fact that such criticism over Japanese history textbooks was incorrect. They don’t seem to be patriotic, instead they seem to inspire the least patriotism of all. They don’t glorify the war, emphasize the importance of the military, or describe acts of heroism on the battlefield. They are timelines that only give accounts of historical events without describing narratives…

Strange Result

In contrast, most of the East Asian countries claim in their guidelines of school textbooks that the history textbook should enhance the people’s ethnic self-esteem and national identity (a sense of belonging). This is seen as being a basic role in the history education of the country. Enhancing ethnic self-esteem sometimes produces a strange result. For example the Korean history textbook doesn’t mention the main events during the war, which the other countries’ textbooks refer to, such as the war that occurred in China in 1937, the Pearl Harbor attack and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Instead it focuses entirely on the Korean’s resistance movement against Japan’s colonial administration or their cultural development in literature. In other words Korean’s history textbook is a story of the ethnic strife’s process for liberation.

Ethnocentric Description

It is probably the Chinese history textbook that describes the war in the most patriotic way. It is filled with descriptions of heroic military operations, and even suggests that it was China, chiefly the Communist Party of China, that ultimately defeated Japan. There are no references to either the war which took place in the Pacific or the importance of a role that the allied country had played there.
It also doesn’t highlight the role that the atomic bombing had played in ending the war, rather it says that the determining factors for ending the war were the general attack against Japan demanded by Mao Tse-tung and the Soviet Union’s entry into the war.
The history textbooks of China and Taiwan say that the victory in the Anti-Japanese War wiped out China’s disgrace for a century, which the Imperialism force brought on her by disregarding her rights and benefits.
The Chinese textbook also insists that China has kept on struggling for anti-imperialism even after the war against the US that it regarded as a new enemy. New China is described as the winner of the Korean war in the book, stating that they stopped the US from trying to chase “the progressive forces ” away from Asia.

A cable says Takeshima(Dokdo) is Japan’s

A telling evidence for Japanese claim to Takeshima(Dokdo)

This is a cable from Douglas McARTHUR Ⅱ, once the U.S. ambassador to Japan and the General Douglas McARTHUR’s nephew, to the U.S. State Department in 1960. The cable said that the U.S. authority had a hard time with the Yi Syngman regime which draw a national bordered, so-called Rhee Line, on the sea between Japan and Korea in defiance of international laws, and seizing many Japanese fishermen who was fishing around the Rhee Line, using them as political hostage. Besides, it said clearly “Takeshima Island has always been considered as Japanese territory.” This meens it was a simple recognition that Tkeshima(Dokdo) belonged to Japan in that time. So the Japan’s claim to Takeshima has nothing to do with either the WW2 or the Japanese annexation of Korea.
Some Koreans claim that Japan should give up the islands because it lost the war, but this is also their own peculiar logic. Japan did not fight a war against Korea, but rather fought together in WW2. Korea was not a victor country of the war, it was the U.S. that Japan defeated with. That country was saying the islands was Japanese territory. Where on earth is the problem on it?

For Assistant Secretary Parsons from MacArthur.

Seoul for Ambassador McConaughy.

Now that we have prospect of new and democratic regime in Korea I strongly recommend that as soon as possible we seize opportunity to try to bring about durable solution to Korea – Japan dispute. As long as Rhee held power there seemed little chance of any solution but now we have entirely new situation which could lead to liquidation of Korea – Japan controversy. Implications of Korea-Japan are not just bilateral between government of Japan and Korea but deeply and directly involve US and our inescapable responsibilities in Northeast Asia. As practical matter if reasonable solution is to be found it will be produced only by our good offices and working closely with both Korea and Government of Japan. It is of utmost importance that we identify and be prepared to move swiftly for solution those specific Korea-government of Japan problems which prevent progress toward basic settlement this festering dispute. We do not know what response Communists may make to new Korea regime and it is vital we try to put Korea-Government of Japan house in order as soon as possible.

While Rhee regime violated most basic tenets of democracy in authoritarian police rule imposed on Korean people, it has also in past done violence to most fundamental principles of international conduct and morality by committing acts of piracy on high seas around Rhee Line and then imprisoning and holding as political hostage Japanese fishermen and by seizing and holding non-Korean territory by force. The uncivilized practice of hostage diplomacy is one of our serious charge against Communist China and if continued by Korea it will be a great liability to a new democratic Korea regime

I therefore recommend strongly that as soon as new regime is in control in Korea (whether or not it be of interim character) we use all our influence to persuade it (1) to release and return to Japan all repeat all Japanese fishermen hostage (including those who have not completed their sentences) who have suffered so cruelly from Rhee’s uncivilized and oppressive acts and (2) to cease practice of seizing Japanese fishing vessels on high seas. This would not only rid new Korea regime of liability of practicing hostage diplomacy but also more than anything else would lay foundation in Japan for really fruitful negotiations. At same time I would be prepared to press Kishi and government of Japan most strongly that in return for repatriation of all fishermen, Japanese would exercise self-restraint in their fishing operations in Korean Straits until reasonable opportunity had been given for negotiation of mutually agreed Korea – Japan fishing conservation agreement.

In addition to seizing Japanese boats in high seas and practicing hostage diplomacy, Rhee regime also seized by force and is holding illegally Takeshima Island which has always been considered as Japanese territory. This is very serious and permanent irritant in Japan-Korea relations and there can be no over-all Korea-Japan settlement until this island is returned to Japan. Therefore we should also press new Korea regime to return Takeshima to Japan. If it is unwilling to do so pending satisfactory conclusion of over-call Korea-Japan negotiations, new regime should at least signify a willingness to withdraw from as part of mutually satisfactory settlement of other outstanding issues between two countries. While we should press strongly for return of Takeshima to Japan, if by any chance new regime were unwilling to do so we should, as very minimum, insist that they agree to submit matter to International Court of Justice for arbitration.

Finally, we should inform new regime very clearly that it must be prepared to adjust its relations with Japan on terms of reciprocity, in such matters as diplomatic missions, visits by businessmen
and journalists, commercial trade. Japanese have suffered Rhee’s occupation-minded approach for eight years and will be unwilling to accept such indefensible treatment from his successor. In its own interests, new regime should start with conformity with normal International standards of conduct, and could most usefully begin (in terms of Japanese and other free world opinion) by permitting Japanese diplomatic mission to enter and function in Korea on same terms Korea Embassy operates here.

If we now move swiftly with new Korea regime which should generally be receptive to our views because of our helpfulness, we may have initial opportunity, which may never reoccur, to influence its position on Japan-Korea problem. Japanese would certainly welcome warmly and reciprocate fully, measures indicating new Korea regime willing take “new look” at Japan.

Why Koreans not follow the international rule?

Why Korea can not obey the international rule? It just may not be a civilized country yet? They should return the Kannon statue to the Kannonji as soon as possible. This is clearly a violation of UNESCO treaty. The follow article is from the Sankei Shinbun on 14 March, 2013.

The Buddha statue theft,”stop cultural exchanging with Korea ”
Angry Tsushima, rising anti-korea

The problem of the Kannon bodhisattva(50.5cm tall) stolen from Kannonji in Tushima City, Nakazaki prefecture, increasingly undermines relationship between Japan and Skorea. Though the stature was found in Korea the Korean court has issued an interim injunction to restitution. The Buddhist world of Korea claims “The stature was looted by Wako(Japanese pirates who frequented the coastal seas of Korea and China from the 13th to the 16th century)”, but according to this theory, the most part of antiquities or Buddha stature from Korea can just regarded as a target for restitution. Now tremendous anger toward Korea surged in Tsushima that has built bridges between the two countries.

pay no heed to the history of anti-Buddhist

“It takes a lot of nerve to steal such a religious object that Tsusima people have preserved with a great care, and then they are not going to return the statue to the temple by quibbling.. This is similar way that N.Korea kidnapped Japanese people from it’s territory, isn’t this? We can only say it’s like a so-what attitude of a person who does wrong” said Tanaka, the priest of Kannonji…

Many Buddha statures made in Korea in 7th to 14th century, but the Buddha-smashing happened everywhere in Korea because Korea’s Yi dynasty established in the end of the 14th century set Confucianism as a state religion. According to legend Japanese brought the discarded Buddha statures back to Japan Being unable to stand by and watch any longer.

Temples in Tushima own dozens of Buddha statues of the age of Unification Silla, but most have burn marks or deficits. Also the statue of Kannonji, seems to be made in the Busokusa temple in the first half of the 14th century, is imperfect, without halo. The Busokusa temple was abandoned temporarily in the Yi dynasty
period. so the statue appear to bring to Tsushima during this period.

However, the Buddhist world of Korea stubbornly insists that it was stolen. On March 14 and 15 some monks of the Busokusa temple came to the Kannonji from Korea with a letter saying “We hope that the Kannon bodhisattva will return to it’s origin(the Busokusa temple) soon” and a cheap souvenir doll similar to the Kannon as substitute for real one.

Violation of UNESCO treaty

Tsushima City has invited Korean dance company and held the parade of the Korean envoys who were members of a diplomatic mission of the Joseon Dynasty. But the festival organizer Yamamoto Hiromi said “They insulted us by talking such nonsense! We would better cancel the festival” A man who live in the Koami villedge with the Kannonji said “We all get angry largely because we have worshipped the Kannon as a God for hundreds of years. Tere are some people saying that they don’t want Koreans to visit here because they are unpredictable.”

Also the other case in the past. The Buddhist scripture “Large Wisdom sutras(大般若経)”, important cultural properties, housed by the Ankokuji temple in Iki City, Nagasaki prefecture was stolen in 1994,
a scripture closely resembling it found out in Korea the next year. Foreign Ministry of Japan requested Korea to conduct an investigation of it since the Ministry thought it was strongly suspected of being the stolen one, but Korean govt reject it and surprisingly it designated the scripture as a national treasure of Korea!

It is clearly stated in Japan‐S.Korea Basic Relations Treaty and Economic Cooperation Agreement, that “claim right of property and rights have been solved completely and ultimately” . So it is violation of UNESCO Ban Treaty of the Illicit Export and Import of Cultural Property that Korea rejects to return the stolen statue to Japan…(The rest is omitted)

A good story

.
459276Japanese audiences with the board saying “Thank you Taiwan for big aid to 3.11”
.

The World Baseball Classic was over.
Japan lost to Puerto Rico in the final round. but I heard a touching story concerning this international Baseball Tournaments.
.
When Japan experienced a terrible disaster just two years ago, all over the world people send us their deep sympathy, sincere prayer and comforting words. Most Japanese were surprised first at seeing too many people care about us, and then very impressed, encouraged by them. We will never forget that. Above all, the Taiwanese raised more than $200 million for the Tohoku earthquake victims. Afterwards Jp’s Gvot placed ads to express Japan’s deep thanks in local papers of the countries that made donations to Japan, but we couldn’t see the name of Taiwan there for maybe the political reason. We felt annoyed with both Jp and Cn governments that abused Taiwan People’s goodwill.
.
So, Japanese baseball fans thought of an idea that they would express special thanks to Taiwan by hunging hand-made boards saying “thank you Taiwan” at the match of the WBC between Japan and Taiwan in Tokyo Dome. In the end Japan won the game but it came to a great and exiting one enough to become history. While a tense seesaw battle unfolded many Japanese audience hold the boards in their hands and supported both team. What is the most touching scene there was that after the game all Taiwan players emerged from the bench and bowed deeply at the stands. What a beautiful scene! The game was filled with the real pleasure of the sports and respect for each other.
I was more than glad and moved to see that Taiwan people even now share the values like courtesy which Japanese have placed importance on for long time, though it seems they must have had mixed feelings about Japan in the history between the two nations.

Thanks letter from Chinese govt to Japanese

.
This is a letter of appreciation from the Chinese Consul of Nagasaki to Japanese fishermen, presented on 20th May,1920, for the reason that 7 Japanese fishermen saved 31 Chinese crew who had been shipwrecked off the coast of one of the Senkaku islands (Chin:Diaoyutai). The letter had been kept by a son of one of the rescuers, and then donated to the government of Ishigaki.
In the letter we can see the words for the place name that the Chinese survivors drifted to, described clearly as “Wayo Island, Senkaku Islands, Yaeyama District, Okinawa Prefecture, Imperial Japan(日本帝国沖縄県八重山郡尖閣列島和洋島)”. Wayo Island is what the Chinese call Uotsuri Island now, which means that the Chinese Government at the time undoubtedly recognized the Senkaku Islands as Japanese territory. I think this would be a strong evidence that proves the validity of the Japanese claim over the Senkaku Islands.

A Japanese scholar’s point

People in any other country outside Japan may not know that no matter how dirty words China or N,S.Korea tosses against Japan, both Japanese people and media(TVs, radios and newspapers ) seldom criticize or speak evil of them. Even though many Japanese companies had dreadful experiences by violent anti-Japan demonstrations over disputes of Senkaku islands last September in China, rather, our medea said recently ”We should provide the latest technologies for reducing air pollution to China with no compensation” ..
So most of Japanese must not be able to believe their own ears to hear that Japanese today drift to the right. I can tell you that in every respect, Japanese are far less nationalistic than Chinese or Koreans.

Then, today I will introduce an article where the author unusually speaks right out for the modest Japanese. He is a political and historical scholar, seems that he has lived in Korea, very angry about what the neighboring countries have done in these days.
As the article is long I translated only extract. (sorry if mistranslation)

The world of “Better tell a lie ’cause sometimes you get lucky. ”

I think it has become clear for Japanese that Japan is encircled by a family of grave nations, that is, kidnapper(North Korea), islands robber(South Korea) and sea robber(China).

《in quest of victory against Japan》

Since I have written a book called “Anti-Japan Triangle in East Asia” I’ve given warning through these columns again and again, that Japan would have to be faced with crises by them like now . Their nationalism override on Sinocentrism that is the principle they are absolutely right. The three countries are opposed to the prosperity of Japan forever and ever because they considered Japan as outlying region in the Middle Ages. Their nationalisms burst from the layer of heritage in the form of anti-Japanism.

There also were problems in the process of attaining independence. S.Korea was freed by the US without the battle against Japan, N.Korea conducted only limited guerrilla war against Japan and yet lost big, ended up getting a Soviet’s puppet, and China restored it’s energy while their fellows fought against Japanese troops, after the war it gained independence by kicking the fellows out.
These countries could not create the national stories without a pseudo-history that they defeated Japan.
Therefore They will continue to infringe Japanese sovereignty and inveade Japan to show thier peoples that they are battling against Japan all the time. (snip)

《Don’t close your eyes to China and N.Korea’s wrongs》

In postwar Japan, the left-wing intellectuals have spreaded around a pattern of the simple dichotomy of good and evil, that is to say, as Japan caused damage to China and Korea by invading them it is evil, on the other hand China and Korea are right. They said if Japan is 2 meter-level evil, invading Tibet by China is 1 meter-level one. furthermore even said “Japan’s war responsibility for China is not counterbalanced only because China has equipped with nuclear arms” ( from “Ideological change in Japan’s foreign policy” written by Sakamoto Yoshikazu) Sakamoto is the latter standard-bearer of “Global Citizen” Now his words noted above is a good material that says a lot about his views.

Th similar people like him say something similar. This is the follwing tone..”The reason why S.Korea doesn’t accept the joint petition of the two countries to International Court of Justice, is because Japan lacks a sense of responsibility for the history”, “Japanese are under the sociopsychological situation
that they want to forget the fact that they invaded Asian countries in the war”

However, to borrow their phrase, the evils that the three countries did have exceeded 2 meters. They kidnapped many Japanese, scraped off the Japanese islands, try to fill both the South and East Seas with human wave tactics. They insulted the Japanese head of state, mugged the national flag from the
official car the Japanese ambassador ride, randomly destroyed and looted many Japanese factories or department stores by violent demonstrations under Beijing’s control

In terms of “Better tell a lie ’cause sometimes you get lucky” these countries and the Japanese left-wing intellectuals make a little difference.

2 pictures about the comfort women issue

.
The images above are displayed by a lawmaker Nariaki Nakayama in the Diet deliberations in Japan on 8 March, 2013 as source material abuot the issue of the military comfort women. The contents of them are parts of the article appeared in the Japanese newspaper Chosen-Asahi(朝鮮朝日) published on 11 May, 1933, in Korea, during Japan’s annexation. It reported the results of regional elections for legislature representatives in 13 regions of the Korean Peninsula, listed all the winner’s name and some photographs of their faces. Although the notorious Japan’s annexation of Korea, the pictures told that 80 percent of the winners of elections are Koreans. For example, 8 governors of 12 county of Chunchonnam-do(忠清南道) were Koreans. Also the second-ranking captain and a higher detective of Tejon police office(大田警察署) were Koreans.
This is what the lawmaker Nakayama would have to say..
that it was impossible that Japanese army staffs took Korean women by force in Korea because there were many Korean public officials and police officers at that time in the peninsula. if Japanese indeed did such a thing, the local Koreans wouldn’t have remained silent. He thinks it could be a circumstance evidences of denying the Japanese army seizing women. Also according to the book “Yokuwakaru Iannfu mondai” written by Nishioka Tsutomua, a Korean press said “There was no way they could, because it’s hardly possible that Japanese men went deep into the Korean countryside alone in those days.”

S.Korea stands by the thief side?

An interesting article in a sport paper in Japan.
Korea stands by the thief side? Why they don’t obey the international rule?
Following is the summary of the article.

“WBC S.Korean team paid for it!”

In October 2012, a statue of the Goddess of Kannon, Japanese designated cultural property, was stolen from the Kannonji temple in Tsushima City Nagasaki Prefecture. In January 2013, Korean theft ring that stole the statue were arrested in S.Korea, but the statue didn’t go back to Japan. A S.Korean citizen group claimed “The statue is a stolen one from a Korean temple by Wako (Japanese pirates who frequented the coastal seas of Korea and China from the 13th to the 16th centuries) in the age of Silla or Goryeo, so it originally Korean’s” They sought an injunction against restitution of the statue. And unbelievably the S.Korean court accepted it!

On 26 Feburary S.korean district court made a judgment that the Busokusa temple in S.Korea must keep the statue until Kannonji proves that they got the statue by fair means. “How we could do this? Instead, what are they going to do if we say ‘Show us the proof Wako stole it’ I really don’t think Koreans could understand common sense.”said Tanaka, who is the priest of the Kannonji. “At that time, Confucianism became widespread and Buddism went out of Korea… There even were historical facts that Wako took the Buddha statues back for protection out of pity”

“It is just punishment of Heaven for stealing statue of the Goddess of Kannon, that S.korean baseball team lost in the first round in the WBC games” said Tanaka.
The Goddess of Kannon has been loved very much by the people of the City of Tsushima. So they are really angry at S.Korea. The local people are saying that the S.Koreans won’t get away with it.

Bad things happen after another in S.Korea now.
Not only miserable 1st round defeat in the WBC but also the more serious problem.. North Korea declared the rejection of the agreement of truce between N and S.korea. S.korea moves into a critical phase both domestically and externally.
